Keynote Speakers and Major Discussions:
The Egypt workshop was opened with a welcome speech by Prof. Dr. Alsnosy Balbaa, Vice- President of AASTMT, who emphasized the significance of integrating the blue economy into local and global frameworks. This was followed by an insightful introduction by Prof. Dr. Kareem Tonbol, who briefed the audience on the objectives of the BLUE-ERA project and specific goals of the workshop.

Detailed Sessions:

  • Maritime Education and Training in Light of the Blue Economy: Prof. Dr. Hesham Helal discussed the integration of blue economy concepts into maritime education to align with industry needs.
  • The Blue Economy in the Mediterranean: Capt. Eslam Badry provided an overview of the opportunities and challenges in the MENA region, focusing on sustainable maritime and economic activities.
  • Improving Livelihoods through the Blue Economy: Prof. Dr. Mohamed Shaltout spoke on the potential of the blue economy to enhance livelihoods and job opportunities in Egypt.
  • Blue Growth and Aquaculture: Prof. Dr. Tamer El Said Ali explored modern approaches in aquaculture that align with blue growth principles.
  • Blue Economy and Renewable Energy: Dr. Omneya Ibrahim discussed how the blue economy can synergize with renewable energy initiatives to foster sustainable development.
  • Corporate Social Responsibility in the Blue Economy: Dr. Eslam Alhogaraty highlighted the role of sustainable practices within corporate strategies in the blue economy.

 

International Perspectives:

  • Prof. Dr. Maria Giovanna Parisi shared insights into Italy’s role in the international partnership activities of the blue economy, specifically actions directed towards Egypt.
  • Prof. Dr. Rachid AMA presented about “Why do we need a sustainable blue economy in the Mediterranean region?”.
  • Sustainable Blue Economy in Greece: Prof. Dr. Ourania Tzoraki and Dr. Alexandra Ćulibrk discussed Greece’s approach to integrating maritime transport, aquaculture, and educational activities within the blue economy.

 

Panel Discussion:
The workshop concluded with a panel discussion titled “Shaping the Future: Needs and Expectations of Stakeholders,” which focused on gathering stakeholder insights to guide future initiatives in the blue economy. Summary of Outcomes and Stakeholder Engagements:
This offered, through multidisciplinary dialogue, a proximity understanding of the complex interplay between local initiatives, on the one hand, and global trends in the blue economy, on the other hand, by scholars and experts to policymakers and industry captains. The discussions noted with satisfaction the educational reforms, policy support, and international cooperation that were to be harnessed effectively to be able to tap into the blue economy for development of the region. The recommendations coming out of this workshop will be made in a way that relates to policy and practical application to Egypt and the greater Mediterranean region, so as to ensure that the blue economy does indeed catalyze sustainable development.
